Information Science 587: Mining the Web

Project 2: Creating a Wiki

IS 587 is a course that focuses on searching, evaluating, and assessing the usability of the Web. The course includes selected emerging Web technologies that impact user's interaction with the Web, especially in terms of finding information. This is a new assignment and your feedback is needed. You could include feedback on your own wiki if you choose to create your own.

The purpose of this project is to gain experience in working with and creating a wiki. Wikis are not blogs! In a blog, someone writes an article, and other people add comments to the bottom. But no one "owns" a wiki article. Instead, you update and add to a wiki article. Comments below a main article should be used with caution.

Tasks

Your task is to create a wiki on a topic of interest to your team. You should include information in such as way that the reader of your wiki is provided with adequate information to build a solid, basic understanding of the topic. Items to include in the entries include definitions, explanations of the concept, historical background, examples, and a discussion of any major debates or controversies related to the topic. Read about the topic. Include multiple entries, linking them to one another.

Indicate what is important. Also, include the following about each entry:

  • A link to authoritative articles and/or sources used.
  • A Link to authoritative videos and/or images that illustrate the concept(s) or topic.

Other Requirements

  • One person should be assigned as the Editor of the created wiki.
  • Each group memeber should add to the wiki and/or update it. Keep records of such addition or update with your name and the date of update.

Group members

Four or Five students can be in a group to create a new wiki or use this wiki for the project. List the names of the members in the wiki.

Sources

Include the sources used in your wiki, as appropriate.

Meetings

Include the meeting schedule for working on the wiki along with the name of each member and his/her availability. See examples below:

When should we meet?

Who When I can meet
Bo M-F, 8am-5pm
Carey Anytime after 2pm
Monica Saturday, 5pm
Kathy Sunday, 4pm-8pm

Grading

A grading rubric will be developed and used to assess the quality, organization, and usefulness of the wiki. An example of such a rubric is located at Wiki Evaluation Rubric
